The Internet is defined as a global interconnection of computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite to link all devices in the whole world. It is sometimes known as the Net.
Many people usually interchange the terms Internet and World Wide Web. Some people would speak of going on the Internet when they want to view web pages or use the web browser. However, the term World Wide Web or Web for short, is only one of the several services offered by the Internet. World Wide Web is a collection of web pages or interconnected documents and other web resources linked by URLs and hyperlinks. It uses a language known at the HTTP or Hypertext Transfer Protocol. This language is used for information transfer on the Web. However, it is just one of the many languages that are used for communication on the Internet.
The Infrastructure of the Internet
The infrastructure of the Internet is composed of hardware components and a system of software layers that control the different aspects of its design.
- Routing and service tiers – The packet routing all over the Internet involves several tiers of Internet service providers. The Internet service providers are responsible for establishing worldwide connectivity between each individual network at different levels of scope. The bottom tier are the end-users who access the Internet only to perform a function or get information. The top tier are the large telecommunication companies that exchange traffic directly with each other through peering agreements. The middle tier are those networks who buy Internet transit from other providers to reach a small traffic on the global Internet.
- Access – The most common method employed by users to access the Internet is through a dial-up with a computer modem through telephone circuits, broadband, Wi-Fi satellite and cellular telephone technology. The Internet can also be accessed from computers in Internet cafes, and Internet access points in most public places like airport halls and coffee shops. Technology has also introduced the wireless community networks. Commercial Wi-Fi services are now covering several large areas in the cities and major towns.
- Structure – Scientists describe the Internet as a primary example of a large-scale and highly engineered system but is very complex. The structure of the Internet has experienced several failures and was found to be vulnerable to intentional attacks to destroy it. The Internet structure and its usage characteristic are continuously and extensively studied to prevent these attacks.
